MADRID Alvin Kamara Saints Jersey , Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- The return of Pedro Sanchez as the leader of the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) has given the party a big boost in voting intentions, according to a quarterly poll published by Spain's Center for Sociological Investigation (CIS) Friday.
Sanchez returned to PSOE leadership after defeating Susana Diaz in a leadership vote on May 22.
He had previously resigned from the post before his party abstained to allow Mariano Rajoy to become Spanish prime minister in the wake of the June 26 general election in 2016.
Sanchez's return to power in the PSOE has seen his party jump 5 percent in the CIS poll to 24.9 percent in the last three months, while the 24.9 percent of the vote they now attract is 2.3 percent above the 22.6 percent of the vote the Socialist won in the last general election.
Although Rajoy's People's Party (PP) would still win a general election if one were held today in Spain, the new CIS poll gives them just 28.8 percent of the votes, almost 3 percent less than the 31.5 percent they polled in April.
It should also be pointed out that the CIS poll was taken during the period July 1 to July 10, before Rajoy's historic court testimony as a witness in the ongoing Gurtel trial in which his party is implicated in accepting cash for awarding public contracts and using the money to illegally fund election campaigns.
Left-wing formation Unidos Podemos has seen a slight rise in fortunes from 19.7 to 20.3 points, while center right formation Ciudadanos saw a slight drop in support from 14.9 to 14.4 percent, according to the poll.
