Kenyatta announced he will on Friday lead security agencies in destroying a ship seized last month with heroin valued at about 11. 37 million U.S. dollars.

"We do not care who owns the ship or the drugs but we will destroy them to serve as a lesson to those bent on ruining our children," Kenyatta said when he opened this year's Mombasa International Show.

The drugs were seized in July by security agencies who were tipped of the vessel by the Interpol and U.S. drug reinforcement agencies.

The officers intercepted the ship and escorted to the port of Mombasa where it docked under tight guard by both Kenya Navy and other security agencies.

Kenyatta declared a total war on the menace that has ruined the lives of many young people in the country, stressing that the port of Mombasa will no longer be a passage for the importation of illicit drugs.

"We will not allow drug barons to destroy the future of our young people. We will track and deal with them decisively," he said.

The UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has on several occasions cited Kenya as a transit point for re-packaging and trans-shipment of drugs to Europe and America.

International investigators have established that proceeds from narcotic trade are used to finance global terrorist networks.

Tracking hoolocks is never easy. Li planned the current excursion with a group of visitors a week in advance. Thanks to the fine weather and a bit of luck, he found signs of hoolocks near his current base at Nankang Station. A few hours' walk in the forest was enough to find them.

When he first started as a ranger, Li had no GPS or climbing gear, just cheap rubber shoes and ex-army camouflage fatigues. The station was a rundown shed made from bamboo and sticks.

"Finding a flat and dry place to rest during a patrol was a luxury," he recalls.

More challenging were the mountains. The ever-changing weather and varied terrain made every patrol unpredictable. Rangers could be dripping sweat in hot and damp subtropical forest in a river valley, and frozen two hours later on a snowy mountain ridge.
